In our last blog we gave you tips on how to maximise your range in an electric car, this time we look at helpful ‘charging etiquette’ to try and avoid any unhappy or disgruntled faces when trying to charge your EV at a public charging station.

Wait in Queue

Starting with the basics, it’s crucial to respect the queue at charging stations. While it might be challenging to gauge how many vehicles are ahead of you, a polite inquiry can often provide clarity.

Parking Isn't Charging

A common frustration among EV drivers is encountering parked vehicles occupying charging spots without actually charging. Please refrain from using a charging space unless you genuinely require charging, even if it’s for a brief period.

Extend a Helping Hand

Navigating public charging stations can be daunting, especially for newcomers to the EV community. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance from fellow EV drivers if you find yourself in a bind. Likewise, lend a hand to others who might be struggling, particularly if you’re experienced in using charging stations.

Choose Appropriate Charging Speeds

When faced with multiple charging options, it’s essential to match the charging speed with your vehicle’s capabilities. Opting for a higher charging speed beyond your car’s capacity not only wastes resources but also deprives others of access to faster charging.

Hands Off Others' Vehicles

Under no circumstances should you unplug or interfere with another person’s charging session, regardless of the duration. If you urgently require charging, explore alternative charging points using platforms like Zap Map.

Avoid Overstaying

While it’s acceptable to charge your EV until you reach your desired level, be mindful of others waiting for their turn. Charging beyond 80% capacity not only slows down the process but also inconveniences fellow EV owners.

Maintain Charger Cleanliness

After completing your charging session, ensure the charging bay is left in a tidy condition for the next user. Simple gestures like properly reattaching the connector and disposing of any litter can enhance the charging experience for everyone.

Utilising public charging infrastructure offers more than just convenience; it’s an opportunity to connect with fellow EV enthusiasts and share insights. If you have additional charging etiquette tips to share, we’d love to hear from you!
