SUV in a field

Everyone seems to want an SUV at the moment, yet we’re a country that very rarely takes our vehicles off-road. So what is the appeal? Is it the shape? Or is it that you sit higher up? Some people feel that safety is a huge factor.

Today we’re going to look at the car subscription providers on our website that offer SUV’s and what exactly they are.

What is an SUV?

SUV stands for Sports Utility Vehicle – Effectively a road-going car with off-road capabilities. Usually SUV’s have a much higher ground clearance than traditional cars and sometimes all-wheel drive, although many manufacturers are now opting to fit 2WD to their vehicles.

SUV’s and Crossover vehicles have become hugely popular in the UK with many manufacturers ensuring they aren’t missing the boat.

What types of SUV are there?

Crossovers

A crossover is effectively a standard car with a higher ground clearance than their traditional road car. Examples of Crossovers include the Mercedes-Benz GLA (Based on the Mercedes A Class), Volkswagen T-Roc (Based on the Volkswagen Polo) and the BMW X1 (Based on the BMW 1 Series).

Mini SUV’s

The most famous of the Mini SUV’s seems to be the Suzuki Jimny, a favourite for many car enthusiasts, but can also relate to vehicles such as the Volkswagen T-Cross and the Vauxhall Crossland

Compact SUV’s

Slightly larger than the Mini SUV’s, vehicles within this category would include the Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Karoq and the Nissan Qashqai. In the premium brands we’d include the Audi Q3, BMW X2 and the Mercedes GLB.

Mid-Size SUV’s

Within this category, we would include vehicles such as the Ford Kuga, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC and the BMW X3. It’s also worth looking at Pure Electric versions of these models.

Full-Size SUV’s

Within this category, we would include vehicles such as the Kia Sorrento, BMW X5, Audi Q7, Skoda Kodiaq and the Mercedes GLE, within the all-electric models we’d include the Tesla Model X and the new BMW iX.

Premium SUV’s

These larger and more luxurious cars would include the BMW X7, Mercedes GLS, Bentley Bentayga and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
